The cloud cover again provides spectacular views. |
Our last day of riding starts early so we break camp the final time. No more tent set up or sleeping bags (though I'm not complaining) we are ready to get home. Today holds alot of miles but some things to see as well. I want to take Brad and Rebecca to WALL DRUG - (the tourist trap of tourist traps!) and the Badlands.
Many signs point to Wall Drug... |
Wall Drug in Wall South Dakota |
While traveling through the badlands it was hard to imagine trying to negotiate this area with a wagon as a settler. |
Brad and Rebecca pose in front of incredible yellow and purple hills. |
An Oasis in the usually dry plains |
Bikes are great here but the heat could be uncomfortable. Fortunately the heat is not bad yet and we enjoy the overlooks and the lunar like landscape. |
Hopefully we don't see these. |
Further east in South Dakota old farmstead can be seen along the highway. |
The landscape changes to prairie --- boring - so glad we only have to get to Nebraska to the trailer. |
My odometer rolls 77,777 close to Freeman SD |
yeah!!! Nebraska
The sun is setting and we are still on the road - the oppressive heat has forced us to stop about every hour to soak our shirts to keep cool. This adds a significant amount of time to our travel. |
Our trip included parts of 11States, British Columbia, 20 days and 5800 miles of travel with no serious problems until.........
Only 2 miles from our rendezvous point with the trailer in Norfolk NE we had a problem. Being only two miles away from our destination greatly reduced the seriousness of the problem. In retrospect it could have been much worse and with more serious consequences. The problem - my trailer hitch broke, more precisely the trailer totally detached from my motorcycle.
At the corner of Norfolk and 25th as we crossed the intersection I hit the intersection pretty hard and the cross street had a significant crown in the road. The bike bottomed out and I heard scraping. I thought the hitch hopped off the ball so I slowed to a stop gently. The trailer was about 20ft back and to the right side of the lane.
We quickly moved the trailer off the road by the mailbox above and went for Brads Four Runner. At the time it was rather funny - it couldn't have been better (unless it broke in Ed's driveway). Thinking more about the situation i could have been really bad - 80mph on the highway with Brad and Rebecca behind me? or coming down a mountain pass with no guardrail? or 1500 miles earlier? We are thankful to God that that was not what happened.
We arrived late to Ed and Kerri Leah's and were able to visit briefly before bed. A real bed!
